Jonathan, Gal Hoyberger, is an innocent young man living in Tel Aviv. He works as a supervisor at a children’s home run by his mother, after leaving the family home in the nearby moshav. He rents a modest apartment and occasionally watches over his younger sister, a mischievous girl who spends time with a group of young Arabs. His days feel steady but tempered by a sense of longing for a life with more certainty.

His lover, Miki Aki Avni, a soldier whom Jonathan moved to Tel Aviv for, is not loyal to him and shows little appetite for a stable, lasting relationship.

Later, Jonathan meets Thomas, a man living with AIDS who has come from New York to visit Israel, where his mother and grandmother live in Jonathan’s building. Jonathan is drawn to Thomas and yearns to spend more time with him. Thomas’s mother Rivka Michaeli is an introverted seamstress who shares a home with her own mother, a grumpy and cynical elder who often teases her daughter. A quiet romance begins to form between Jonathan and Thomas, but it remains incomplete, restrained by Thomas’s fear of causing pain and his ongoing need to hide his terminal illness from those around him.

Thomas eventually returns to New York, leaving Jonathan with a mixture of hope and doubt, aware that a future reunion may never come true. Several years later, Thomas dies in New York, and Jonathan is left to carry both the memory of what they shared and the bittersweet truth that life can be fragile and unpredictable.
