As the 1964 Tokyo Olympics approach, Rynosuke Chagawa awaits a new TV to watch the games. His pregnant wife Hiromi runs a bar, and he adds a second floor to his shop so adopted son Junnosuke can study for Tokyo University, hoping to spare him the hardships Rynosuke endured. Competition arrives when a new story, “The Virus,” appears in the publication that prints his “Boy’s Adventure Book,” while neighbor Norifumi Suzuki gets a deluxe TV.
