All in a Night’s Work 1961

Tony Ryder, Dean Martin, inherits his late uncle’s magazine empire and walks into a boardroom where a panel of directors questions whether a carefree playboy is truly fit to run the business. The trouble deepens when a hotel detective reveals that a young woman was seen fleeing his uncle’s Palm Beach hotel room on the night of the death, wearing nothing but a Turkish towel and an earring. That mystery woman turns out to be Katie Robbins, Shirley MacLaine, who actually works in Tony’s own research department. The board orders Tony to keep a detective shadowing her to head off any potential blackmail, hoping the probe will keep the company out of hot water. But the more Tony tries to learn what his uncle’s relationship with Katie might have been, the more he finds himself drawn to her, and the less he cares about the board’s warnings.

Complications arrive in the form of Katie’s fiancé, a straight-laced veterinarian, and the board’s insistence that Katie be silenced at all costs. Tony presses ahead with a scheme that includes a provocative trip to the veterinary clinic of Dr. Warren Kingsley, Sr. Charles Ruggles, hoping to size up the competition. He goes so far as to kidnap a dog, hoping to gain access to the clinic, only to be surprised by the dog’s muscular owner, Warren Kingsley, Jr. Cliff Robertson, and forced to beat a hasty retreat while Kingsley, Sr. stands in the crossfire.

When the Kingsley parents come to New York to meet Katie, the encounter is revealing in its own right. Dr. Warren Kingsley, Sr. Charles Ruggles and Mrs. Kingsley (Mabel Albertson) quickly discover Katie’s gaps—her inability to cook and her low tolerance for alcohol. The father, though outwardly composed, proves to be a henpecked figure who secretly enjoys a grand tour of Manhattan’s nightspots, hinting at the mismatch between appearances and private appetites in this social circle.

As the layers of amusement and tension unfold, Warren Kingsley, Jr. is exposed as something of a “Mamma’s Boy,” a detail that deepens the complexity of Tony’s evolving feelings. Amid this swirl of family approval, corporate pressure, and personal attraction, Tony finds himself leaning into commitment rather than calculation. In a bold, crowded elevator, he demonstrates his loyalty and, in his own way, his intent to protect Katie, choosing a future together over the plans that the board had laid out for them both.
