In a tense, science‑fiction thriller frame, a mysterious figure seizes a camera and reels of footage reveal a murky corridor filled with distant screams before the device is placed into a disposal chute that opens into space. The camera falls back to Earth and is later recovered by the U.S. Air Force, and onscreen text explains that the footage is being used as part of Project Blue Book, setting a documentary‑style premise for what follows.
Riley Morris, an autistic boy who keeps a video journal, is on a family camping trip in Brown Mountain, North Carolina with his father, Peter, his mother, Katie, and his siblings, Corey and Jillian. On the final night, Riley is startled by flashes of light outside the tent, and the children witness eerie sky lights that quickly vanish. The next day, as the family heads home, their GPS inexplicably guides them down a remote route, cellphone signals disappear, and the car runs low on gas. A crow drops dead beside the road, an ominous sign that nothing will feel ordinary again.
Their journey leads to a blocked tunnel lined with recently abandoned vehicles. Peter, Corey, and Riley venture out to inspect while Katie stays with Jillian. Personal belongings lay scattered around the cars, suggesting the abrupt and forced absence of the occupants. A humanoid silhouette appears at the tunnel’s end, and Peter realizes it is not human. He urges the boys to run, then is engulfed in a brilliant light and vanishes, leaving the children shaken and alone with Katie.
The family reunites near the car as a murder of crows descends and the vehicle suddenly dies. They flee to a nearby cabin they had passed earlier, where Sean, a wary and solitary local, initially blocks their way. His stance shifts when he hears his guard dog being attacked by something that followed them from the tunnel. Sean, the family, and their dog barricade themselves inside as he explains that the Brown Mountain Lights and disappearances have haunted the area for centuries. After a radio message from Sean’s missing brother crackles to life, Sean’s resolve hardens and he departs, leaving the family on edge.
The cabin’s security soon breaks. In a desperate bid to save his loved ones, Corey hides the others in the cellar and blocks the door as alien beings breach the home. Corey is abducted, while the remaining family members scramble for safety. Sean returns, moving the group to his truck and planning to drive them back toward town. They narrowly escape to a nearby barn, hoping shelter is enough, but the aliens pursue. Katie and Sean are abducted in a brutal moment, and Riley and Jillian retreat deeper into the woods, trying to stay one step ahead of the otherworldly pursuers.
As dawn breaks and the family climbs down the mountain, they glimpse a town in the valley only to find that the road leads back toward the tunnel where Peter vanished. Jillian collapses in despair, but a police car appears, offering a fragile moment of normalcy. The aliens strike again, abducting the police officer, Jillian, and Riley—who clutches the camera as he is taken. The surviving footage reveals a rapid ascent into orbit before cutting back to the film’s opening sequence. The capture ends with two men in respirators and Hazmat suits retrieving the camera and driving away in a U.S. Air Force van.
In a mid‑credits scene, a year later, a North Carolina state trooper discovers Peter huddled on a bridge—naked, disheveled, and in a shock that hints at deeper horrors. The fate of the rest of the family remains uncertain, though the radio chatter from officers hints that Peter may not be the only survivor found. The haunting, unresolved aftermath invites viewers to wonder what happened to Riley, Jillian, and Katie, and what truth lies behind the recurring disappearances and the elusive Brown Mountain Lights.
