Akeelah Anderson, an 11-year-old with a passion for spelling, navigates her life at Crenshaw Middle School, a largely African American institution in South Los Angeles. Living with her widowed mother, Tanya, her three older siblings—Kiana, Devon, and Terrence—and her infant niece, Mikayla, Akeelah is urged by her principal, Mr. Welch, to participate in the Crenshaw Schoolwide Spelling Bee. Initially resistant to the idea, she is eventually coerced into joining the competition to avoid detention for her frequent absences and ultimately triumphs.

After her impressive win, Akeelah catches the attention of Dr. Joshua Larabee, a visiting English professor who challenges her with difficult words. He sees potential in her that could take her to the Scripps National Spelling Bee. However, after a tense interaction when she approaches him for coaching, he declines her request. Undeterred, Akeelah decides to prepare independently for the district spelling bee. Despite facing difficulties—including a slip-up during the final round—she earns another shot at the regional bee when Kiana witnesses foul play from another contestant. Along the way, Akeelah forms a friendship with Javier Mendez, a 12-year-old Mexican-American speller, who invites her to his spelling club.

At Woodland Hills, Akeelah encounters Dylan Chiu, a competitive Chinese-American boy with a notable track record in the national bees. After a rough interaction that reveals his disdain, Akeelah’s challenges at home compound with her mother’s struggles due to the family’s past tragedies, including the loss of Akeelah’s father to a robbery. When Akeelah’s desire to compete is met with disapproval, she forges her father’s signature to gain permission and studies secretly with Dr. Larabee.

During a party at Javier’s, Akeelah excels in Scrabble against Dylan but overhears his father demeaning her. These experiences forge an unsettling atmosphere during the state bee, where her mother’s arrival nearly derails her participation. However, a heartfelt conversation leads to Tanya’s reluctant support. Akeelah’s path continues as she, along with Dylan and Javier, advances to the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

As Christmas nears, Akeelah attempts to buy Dr. Larabee a gift, only to find out that he’s stepping back from coaching due to personal memories of his deceased daughter, Denise. He gifts her flashcards instead, leaving her feeling disheartened and isolated. Yet, encouraged by Tanya’s words about the community around her, Akeelah mobilizes her family, friends, and neighbors to help her prepare. Upon reuniting with Dr. Larabee, Akeelah heads to Washington, D.C. with him, Tanya, and others, supported by Dr. Larabee’s generosity in purchasing their tickets.

During the national competition, Akeelah quickly becomes a crowd favorite. As she and Dylan vie for the championship, their respective pressures come to the forefront. In a moment of solidarity and integrity, they both intentionally misspell words, insisting on a fair fight. The two continue to demonstrate their talents until they are crowned co-champions, marking a defining victory for Akeelah. She triumphantly spells “pulchritude,” the same word that eluded her at the start, securing her place in the spotlight and earning the admiration of her community.
