In this tender, small-town drama, a young London girl named Jenny Quin [Mandy Miller] accidentally shatters her mother’s prized china dog, a keepsake that carries a lot of sentiment. To make amends and raise the money to replace it, Jenny leaves a note and sets off to the countryside, traveling with the family of her friend Susie Harris [Molly Osborne] as they head to Kent for a season of hop picking.

At the station, Jenny joins the special hop-pickers’ train toward Goudhurst, but she doesn’t end up with the Harris clan. Instead, she is welcomed by Sam Hines [Harold Lang] and his family, and she adjusts to life among the hop-pickers as the first day unfolds. The journey is filled with new faces, small acts of kindness, and a growing sense of independence as Jenny navigates a world away from home.

During a visit to an antiques shop in Goudhurst, Jenny encounters a china dog that mirrors the one her mother owned. The shop becomes a pivotal moment: Sam lends her the money to buy the dog, and the promise of a tangible link to home gives her a sense of purpose and hope. The story then broadens to the concern of Jenny’s worried parents, who report her missing after a letter fails to reach them. The search intensifies as the police become involved and the family dynamics back home become part of the unfolding drama.

Mr. Quin [Russell Waters] and Mrs. Quin [Mona Washbourne] arrive amid a festive hop wedding, only to discover that Jenny is close by and in danger of losing track of her way back. The drama thickens when the dog is stolen by two local children—referred to in the town as the quick, streetwise Reilly boys. The Reilly brothers, Ned Reilly [Melvyn Hayes] and Pat Reilly [len-garca], embody the untidy, “Artful Dodger” energy that contrasts with the hop-pickers’ earnest labor, and Jenny finds herself pursued through a maze of barns and windmills.

The chase leads to an old windmill where the ladder is removed, trapping Jenny inside as a storm brews. A dramatic turn of fate occurs when lightning strikes, setting the windmill alight. Pat Reilly momentarily stops to help her escape, but in the confusion Jenny leaves the china dog behind inside the burning structure. Ned Reilly, undeterred, re-enters the blaze to retrieve the precious keepsake and returns it to Jenny. Yet the moment is poignantly small and human: Jenny does not thank him, and in a fit of embarrassed frustration, Ned seizes the fire hose from the responding fire engine and sprays water over Jenny, her parents, and their companions, turning a tense rescue into a comic, chastening close.

Throughout, the film threads together themes of belonging, responsibility, and the stubborn pull of home, all framed by the bustling world of hop-picking and the rural English countryside. The china dog symbolism recurs, underscoring Jenny’s longing for connection with her family, while the drama surrounding the Reillys offers a crowd-pleasing counterpoint of mischief and unexpected bravery. The story remains grounded in its warm, human tone, presenting a slice of life where a child’s misstep becomes a voyage of discovery, reconciliation, and the quiet power of small gestures that can bridge distant lives.
