Savi lives in Kolhapur with her father Jagdish Sardesai, a well-known lawyer who keeps a firm frontier between emotion and duty. Jagdish is distant, practical, and often cold, embodying an authoritarian stance that shapes Savi’s upbringing in a bustling, moneyed household where a mother is absent and the staff largely shoulder caregiving duties. The result is a girl who excels in school yet learns to navigate affection with caution, cradled more by routines than by warmth.

When Savi is fifteen, Jagdish brings home a new wife, Amla Sardesai, encountered on a work trip, and reveals this change without prior consultation. Savi is initially upset by the surprise marriage, but over time she grows curious and gradually forms a tentative, gentler bond with Amla, whom she starts calling Ammi. The two women, so different—Ammi’s illiteracy and quiet patience contrast with Savi’s academic brilliance and fiery temperament—begin to look forward to each other’s company. Ammi offers a mothering presence that softens the icy edges of the father-daughter dynamic, even as the household’s dynamics grow more complex.

Yet the harmony between father and daughter remains fragile. The strain eventually pushes Savi to leave home in pursuit of higher studies in Mumbai, seeking independence from a life she has learned to navigate with effort rather than ease. In Mumbai, Savi excels: she completes her Master’s degree, tops her university, and earns a prestigious fellowship at a research institute of her choosing. She also forms a new circle, including Ram, a man who admires her blunt honesty, pragmatism, and straightforward nature. Savi moves into a rented apartment and enters a relationship with Ram, choosing not to return to Kolhapur despite her father’s persistent calls.

One day, just as she is preparing to attend an office party hosted by her boss, Ammi arrives at her doorstep with startling news. Jagdish had died fifteen days earlier, and had chosen not to tell Savi. His will leaves the entire property to Savi, but with one condition: Ammi must be allowed to live with her as her mother. Savi’s initial anger gives way to a reluctant acceptance, and she invites Ammi to stay. The two women reconnect on a deeper level, and Savi begins to see Ammi not as a stepmother but as a true mother figure, introducing Ammi as her mother to others.

Meanwhile, Savi’s relationship with Ram encounters pressure from his family’s expectations around marriage. Ram longs to marry Savi, but Savi is wary of the institution itself and the compromises it demands. After a heated argument, Ram leaves for Nagpur for an office project, and weeks later, Savi learns through mutual friends that Ram has married an old family friend. The news wounds her, yet she hides her pain, while Ammi offers quiet, comforting support. Ammi helps Savi process the heartbreak, suggesting that it’s better to have known love than to have merely staged it against practical constraints.

As life resumes a new rhythm, Savi returns home to find Ammi unwell, shivering in bed. A hospital visit reveals that Ammi is in the last stage of leukemia, a truth she has carried and endured in silence. Ammi explains that their fathers were classmates and that Savi’s father had known about Ammi’s illness when they married. Ammi had come from poverty, and Jagdish’s act of marrying her was never about physical closeness, but about giving Ammi a chance at care and stability for Savi. She recounts how he arranged medicines and doctors, ensuring she would be supported. In Ammi’s final moments, she urges Savi not to bottle up her feelings but to set them free, championing a belief in freedom within relationships.

With Ammi’s passing, Savi makes a decisive shift. She sells her childhood home in Kolhapur, choosing to keep only the belongings that remind her of Ammi, and she opens herself up to the world around her with newfound courage and emotional honesty. The film closes on a note of quiet resilience, a portrait of growth forged through love, loss, and the unspoken depths revealed when a life is shared across generations.
