A Thousand Times Good Night 2013

Rebecca is a photo journalist drawn to dangerous war zones, driven by a steadfast desire to illuminate the human cost of conflict. While documenting a group of female suicide bombers in Afghanistan, she accompanies one of them to Kabul, where a premature detonation leaves her with serious injuries and a long road to recovery.

Back home in Ireland, she is faced with a stark choice by her husband Marcus and their daughter Steph: continue chasing perilous assignments, or protect the family she loves. She makes a difficult decision to prioritize her family, even as the pull of the frontline remains strong.

Steph, curious about her mother’s photographs and drawn to humanitarian work, proposes a photography trip to a refugee camp in Kenya. Marcus agrees, hoping the journey will be safe and routine, while Rebecca weighs the balance between purpose and precaution.

But the trip takes a terrifying turn when the camp comes under attack by an armed group, and people are attacked in their tents. Rebecca stays behind to document the chaos and the violence, directing Steph to safety as she focuses on capturing the crisis from the inside.

Upon returning home, Rebecca and Steph try to shield Marcus from what happened, but he eventually learns the truth and reacts with anger, forbidding Rebecca from seeing the girls. The family fracture adds another layer of pressure to Rebecca’s vocation, underscoring the personal cost of her work.

Just before a planned departure for Kabul, Rebecca receives a voicemail from Steph reminding her about a school presentation on their Kenya trip, a message that subtly communicates Steph’s growing respect for her mother’s mission. That moment weighs on her, shaping her decision about where she should be and what she should be doing.

Rebecca ultimately chooses not to board the plane to Kabul immediately, instead going to the school presentation. That night, she holds her daughters close, and the next day she heads back overseas, returning to Kabul to document the preparation of another suicide bomber—this time a young girl. The experience hits her with renewed intensity, leaving her shaken as the scene fades to black, highlighting the enduring, unsettled impact of war on those who bear witness.
