A Story of Yonosuke 2013

In Tokyo during 1987, Yonosuke Yokomichi arrives from Nagasaki to study Business Administration at Hosei University, and his appearance immediately marks him as the outsider among his peers — his suit is crumpled and his hair uncombed, a small detail that hints at a restless, searching spirit. At the introductory meeting he crosses paths with Ippei Kuramochi, another unconventional student who stands out in the crowd, and during the formal registration he also meets Yui Akutsu, with whom he instantly feels a sense of camaraderie and the decision to explore together rather than go it alone is born out of a shared curiosity about what the city might offer.

A casual cafe encounter introduces Chiharu Katase, a would-be actress who uses him to squeeze a favor from a businessman, a small but telling slice of the kind of schemes and power plays that thread through their social world. He recounts this odd episode to a new friend, Yusuke Kato, who then invites him to join on a double date, widening the circle and the stakes of his social gambits.

On the date, Shoko Yosano, the daughter of a rich businessman, arrives in a chauffeur-driven car and the evening unfolds with a mix of charm and social maneuvering. They end up at a no-frills burger cafe, but circumstances force them to sit as two pairs, turning what starts as casual dating into a more tangled social dance. Shoko develops a real interest in him and then tracks him down to invite him to a pool gathering where she introduces him to her half-brother Katsuhiko and his affluent circle. It is here that he runs into the actress once again, a reminder of the blurred lines between ambition, desire, and fortune.

The next chapter takes Shoko to visit him at his parents’ coastal village home, adding a domestic layer to the evolving relationship. The following day, they head to the beach with a group of friends, and what begins as a potentially intimate moment under the night sky becomes part of a broader, uneasy tableau. As they share a tentative kiss, the arrival of a group of Vietnamese boat people disrupts the scene, and in the chaos a baby is handed to them, embedding the night with a sudden, unsettling sense of responsibility and emotion that threads through the rest of the story. In this city of contrasts, the film patiently follows these young lives as they navigate ambition, romance, and the fragile boundary between safety and danger, all while the backdrop of a changing Tokyo quietly emphasizes their longing to find where they belong.
