A man named Steve breaks into a mine seeking the powerful Orb of Dominance and the Earth Crystal. His discovery grants him access to a mystical realm known as the overworld, where he creates a paradise solely for himself. However, during his adventures, he encounters a portal that sends him spiraling into the perilous Nether. There, he is captured by the cunning Piglin leader, Malgosha, who seeks vengeance on the overworld for being humiliated during a talent show. To keep the orb safe and prevent it from falling into the wrong hands, Steve enlists the help of his loyal dog, Dennis, to hide it away.

Fast forward to the present day, where we meet Garrett “the garbage man,” played by Jason Momoa. After winning a contest, Garrett opens his own gaming store, but soon faces eviction. Determined to raise money, he begins to sift through the belongings left behind in Steve’s former house. During his quest, he stumbles upon both the orb and the Earth Crystal, setting off a chain of events that will change everything.

Elsewhere, siblings Henry and Natalie, who have recently lost their parents, relocate to Idaho and come into contact with a real estate agent eager to open a petting zoo. However, Henry finds himself in hot water on his first day of school when his jetpack malfunction leads to chaos at a local potato chip factory. To escape punishment, Henry fabricates a story, claiming that Garrett is his uncle. This mishap inadvertently reactivates the portal when Henry combines the orb with the Earth Crystal, transporting him and Garrett back to the mines. Alarmed by their disappearance, Natalie and her friend Dawn embark on an adventure to find them. Together, the four friends emerge in the overworld, only to have Malgosha learn of their presence and plan to reclaim the orb from her prison cell.

As night falls, they face off against various monsters, leading Henry to discover his talent for building, as he constructs a fortress to protect them. In a tense moment, Garrett accidentally shatters the orb, but just as dawn breaks, Steve arrives in time to lead their escape. He advises them to head to the woodland mansion to replace the orb, and the group proceeds to a nearby village where Steve teaches them how to craft essential items, though they soon become separated during a piglin attack.

The action escalates as they are pursued by a formidable foe, the great hog. Their escape is thrilling as they jump into mine carts, but their troubles escalate when the great hog is ultimately destroyed by a horde of creepers. Upon reaching the mansion, a clever distraction involving a birthday party allows Steve and Garrett to retrieve both the Earth Crystal and the ender pearl. However, danger lurks when Piglin unleashes another great hog, which obliterates the bridge to the mansion. Although Garrett sacrifices himself during their escape, he remarkably survives the explosion.

Inside a mushroom house, the group begins to mend their bonds. Meanwhile, Piglin seizes the Orb of Dominance, amplifying its powers and declaring war against the overworld. Rallying their strengths, the five friends craft a variety of weapons alongside a band of Iron Golems and devise a plan to retake their realms. Malgosha initiates several surprise attacks against Steve but ultimately meets her end as their final confrontation unfolds. The friends return to the Earth Portal, where Steve entrusts Dennis to Dawn.

Back in the real world, their adventures lead to newfound success as they create their own video game, titled “Block City Battle Buddies.” Dawn opens a zoo with Dennis, Natalie offers self-defense classes, Henry fulfills his dream of building a jetpack, and Steve collaborates with Garrett on music in his store. As Steve visits his old home to reclaim a chest from the attic, he encounters Alex, the house’s current owner, setting the stage for new adventures ahead.
