Andre Shame, Keenen Ivory Wayans is a former LAPD detective turned wisecracking, gun-toting private investigator who runs A Low Down Dirty Shame Investigations. He keeps the business afloat with his energetic and talkative assistant Peaches Jada Pinkett Smith, whom he arrested for shoplifting six years earlier and to whom he has developed a complicated, sometimes flirtatious connection. Despite taking on high-risk jobs, Shame struggles to keep the agency solvent, and the looming possibility of closure casts a shadow over their daily hustle.

Five years ago, Shame and a team of detectives traveled to Mexico to apprehend drug lord, Ernesto Mendoza, Andrew Divoff. Though Shame seemingly shot and killed Mendoza in a shootout, the other detectives were killed, and Shame and colleague Sonny Rothmiller were the sole survivors. This disaster drives Shame to leave the force in disgrace, nursing a tarnished reputation and a personal grievance that won’t quit.

Today, Rothmiller, now working for the DEA, tells him Mendoza is very much alive. He hires Shame to locate the only witness who could testify against Mendoza—his ex-girlfriend Angela, who has slipped out of the Witness Protection Program in New York and is hiding in Los Angeles. Shame is hesitant at first, but viewing this as a chance to finally bring Mendoza down, he accepts the assignment. Angela, Salli Richardson-Whitfield, becomes the anchor of the case and the human complication that tests Shame’s resolve.

Shame quickly learns about Mendoza’s lieutenant, Luis, Shame’s childhood acquaintance, Gary Carlos Cervantes. A lead takes him to a restaurant where Luis warns Mendoza that Shame is coming for him, signaling the dangerous game he’s about to play. Back at his place, Shame is ambushed by Mendoza’s henchmen, and the drug lord himself appears, ruthless and unapologetic, warning Shame to back off.

With the support of Peaches and Wayman, Corwin Hawkins her roommate, Shame traces Angela to a posh hotel, and he calls Sonny to brief him on the unfolding danger. He soon discovers that Rothmiller has aligned with Mendoza, a betrayal that forces Shame and his team to flee to safety. In a bold move, Shame abducts Luis and drags him to an abandoned building, hoping to extract Mendoza’s whereabouts. When Luis refuses, Shame uses a dangerous ploy: he shoves Luis into a tense encounter with a white supremacist gathering, where the pressure and fear push Luis to reveal what Shame needs in exchange for safety. Shame leaves him to his fate once he’s secured the information.

A confrontation at a club escalates into a tense Mexican standoff between Shame and Mendoza, with Mendoza holding a hostage. Wayman’s attempt to draw Shame’s attention becomes a distraction that allows Mendoza to slip away. Shame then returns to Peaches to find Angela missing again, and Captain Nunez, Gregory Sierra, places Peaches under protective custody while Shame presses on to locate Angela.

Shame finally tracks Angela to a storage locker, where he uncovers the grim truth: Mendoza intends to kill Angela because she stole $20 million of his money. A motel call from Mendoza confirms that he has kidnapped Peaches and will exchange her for Angela and the stolen funds. The two agree to meet at a Mendoza-owned shopping mall, and Angela urges Shame to abandon the mission, but he admits that he cares for Peaches and stays the course, moving toward the mall with Angela in tow.

Before the exchange, Sonny confesses his guilt: he killed the other detectives for rejecting Mendoza’s bribe and left Shame to shoulder the blame. The exchange unfolds on a public escalator: Angela is revealed to be a mannequin, a ruse that allows Peaches to open fire and disrupt Mendoza’s mercenaries. Shame fights through the chaos, while Luis is nearly overwhelmed by the attack dogs sent to finish him, and Sonny falls to Angela’s hand.

Mendoza captures Peaches, but Shame corners the drug lord in a brutal fight and finally arrests him. In a last twist, Angela shoots Mendoza, killing him, and then turns her ire toward Shame—though Peaches intervenes to fend off Angela. Nunez threatens to arrest Shame, but Shame reminds him of the broader gains: helping take down a drug lord, identifying Sonny as the DEA mole, locating a federal witness on the run, and recovering $15 million in stolen drug money. Reluctantly, Nunez cuts Shame loose.

In the aftermath, Shame pockets $5 million for expenses, with Peaches receiving perks of a romantic relationship as their partnership both survives and evolves in the shadows of their high-stakes world.
