Stan and Ollie are wandering vagabonds drifting through the wide Arizona countryside, trading jokes for trouble as they aimlessly roam from town to town. Their lighthearted trek comes to a halt when they’re arrested for loitering and spend a night behind bars. When they’re released, a blunt warning awaits: they must leave town immediately because there’s no transportation to keep them moving. Desperate to keep on the road, they strike a curious deal to escort a coffin—containing a corpse—all the way to Dayton, Ohio, convinced that this grim cargo will somehow double as a free ticket out of town.

Unaware that their employers, Frank Lucas and Joe Morgan, are gangsters working for the wanted criminal Darby Mason, the duo agrees to the arrangement and tumbles into a dangerous masquerade. The setup pulls them into a tangled web of deception, with the true players pulling strings behind the scenes and the two misfit travelers caught in the middle, blissfully ignorant of the deadly stakes that hover around them.

On a rattling train, the pair load Mason’s trunk aboard and misidentify it as belonging to a traveling magician named Dante. In the theater, an investigator—Steve Barnes—navigates the frayed edges of justice, operating under the alias Kilgore as part of a trap to corner Mason. The ruse catches Mason and his accomplices in a tense basement standoff, where the truth about a murder begins to surface and the theater’s dark corners hold dangerous secrets.
