Set in a village outside Kameoka near Kyoto, this 36‑minute short is Naruse’s most poignant negotiation of the era’s militarist constraints, directly confronting wartime culture. When a Nippon News (No. 14) reel arrives featuring local Yoichi, the community and his family are stirred. The film opens with marching music and juxtaposes a curious Los Angeles segment showing two hundred Japanese babies, underscoring Japanese imperial ambitions before the Pacific war, as it was released in January 1941.
