Barret Michaelson is an unwelcome newcomer in a public high school, often bullied by his new classmates. He has no friends until another misfit with a troubled reputation, Ryan, saves him from a beating in the men’s locker room. Ryan is a misanthropic existentialist with violent tendencies and a dark past, including the devastating memory that his father murdered his mother and then killed himself in front of him when he was only ten years old.
The two become fast friends who spend much of their time together engaged in philosophical conversation, sharing quiet moments that hint at deeper questions about belonging, choice, and consequence. Their bond remains fragile but real until a confrontation with a local landowner who claims they trespass on his land, an accusation that pushes Barret into reassessing how far he is willing to go to keep Ryan in his life. In a charged moment, Ryan hurls a rock at the man, causing him to fall and strike his neck on the rock. They manage to make it look like an accident, yet the act casts a shadow over their relationship and forces Barret to pull away for a time.
Ryan’s emotional world grows increasingly unstable, and he buys a black market gun as his anger and need for control intensify. Barret, hoping to put the past behind them, agrees that they should move forward, but Ryan becomes more morose and intensely attached to his friend. When Ryan suffers a brutal beating at the hands of the bully who had tormented both of them, he makes his intentions crystal clear: he plans to shoot the bully to death, insisting that it is his destiny and that there is nothing Barret can do to stop him. The two travel to the supposed crime scene, where the bully is found in a secluded area, and Ryan executes his plan.
A desperate attempt to intervene follows. Barret tries to incapacitate Ryan by striking him on the head with a rock, but the blow proves ineffective. In the struggle that follows, the gun goes off, claiming Ryan’s life. Barret then shoots him once more and tries to turn the gun on himself, only to realize the weapon is out of bullets.
The narrative closes with a stark, morally complex reflection on friendship and violence. What starts as a bond between two outcasts spirals into a sequence of irreversible choices that blurs the line between protection and harm, leaving both young men to confront guilt, consequence, and the heavy cost of escaping loneliness at any price.
