Spoilers ahead
Set in a bleak, post-apocalyptic Germany in the year 2016, the film traces a tight-knit slice of human endurance against a world reshaped by catastrophic solar flares. The atmosphere has been permanently altered: the sun burns too bright to face during daylight, temperatures soar, and water and food are scarce. Crops fail and social order dissolves as communities fracture into survival-driven fragments. Against this harsh backdrop, a small trio—Marie, her younger sister Leonie, and Phillip—makes a perilous journey in a Volvo station wagon outfitted with metal mesh on the windows to blunt the relentless glare. To keep out the sun, they tape newspaper and cardboard to the interior, leaving only a narrow strip for the driver to glimpse the road.
