Lisa, portrayed by Mandy Moore, and her sister Kate, played by Claire Holt, embark on a thrilling vacation to Mexico. However, beneath the surface of their getaway lies Lisa’s heartache from a recent breakup that she has been concealing from Kate. One evening, Kate discovers Lisa in tears, revealing that her ex-boyfriend left her due to boredom, suggesting she has lost her sense of fun. Determined to revive their adventurous spirits, Kate convinces Lisa to join her at a lively party, where they meet two charming young men, Louis and Benjamin.

After a seemingly enchanting night, Louis and Benjamin escort the sisters back to their room, leading to a moment of spontaneity where Kate kisses Louis and Lisa shares a fleeting kiss with Benjamin, reflecting her desire to embrace joy once more. The excitement continues as they learn about shark diving, which sparks Kate’s enthusiasm. Although Lisa hesitates, she ultimately agrees to participate, persuaded by Kate’s infectious energy.

The next day, the sisters meet their friend Taylor, skillfully played by Matthew Modine, who is the captain of a dilapidated boat equipped with a rusty shark cage. As the anticipation builds, Taylor asks if Lisa and Kate have any scuba diving experience, to which they assertively respond that they do. Anticipation heightens when it’s finally their turn to enter the shark cage after watching Louis and Benjamin experience the thrill of the ocean.

Once submerged, the sisters initially fail to spot any sharks, prompting Taylor’s first mate, Javier, to entice them into the area by introducing fish blood into the water. But all hell breaks loose when the cage’s line suddenly snaps, plunging Lisa and Kate straight to the ocean floor at a staggering depth of 47 meters (roughly 154 feet). Overwhelmed with panic, Lisa struggles while Kate tries to reassure her amidst the chaos of the vast underwater world.

With no communication from Taylor, Kate bravely decides to venture outside the cage to signal for help. Navigating through the perilous depths, she eventually reaches Taylor, who warns her to remain inside the cage due to the imminent danger of nearby sharks. However, time is of the essence, and with oxygen running low, deep-seated bond and bravery emerge as Kate decides to retrieve support from the surface.

As the plot unfolds, the tension escalates dramatically when a Great White shark ambushes Lisa, leading her to find refuge in a narrow cavern. As Lisa manages to elude the vicious predator, she sprints toward the beam of light that she hopes is her savior, only to witness Javier meeting a grisly end at the jaws of the shark.

Lisa’s resourcefulness continues to shine when she retrieves part of Javier’s body, discovering the necessary cable that will restore their connection to their sunken cage. Just as they think relief is on the horizon, calamity strikes again. The cable snaps, trapping Lisa’s leg and leaving Kate to make a desperate dash for a second supply tank while contending with lurking sharks.

Fueled by desperation, Lisa witnesses Kate in crisis and, with the relentless determination of a sisterly bond, finds a way to replace her oxygen tank in the nick of time. The compelling twist comes when Lisa discovers Kate is still alive, offering a glimmer of hope. Together, they initiate their ascent to freedom, only to confront the terrifying reality of the circling sharks in the murky waters.

Just as they emerge from the depths, fate strikes again; a shark latches onto Lisa, making for a heart-pounding standoff. With sheer instinct, she retaliates by targeting the shark’s eye, ultimately leading to her escape.

Yet, twisting fate reveals an emotional bombshell—Lisa is ensnared in a hallucinatory spiral due to the effects of her oxygen tank as she believes she is finally free aboard the boat. In a poignant climax, the rescue coast guard descends to her aid, bringing her back to reality and off the ocean floor. Lisa’s mental perseverance and emotional strength shine through as tears cascade down her cheeks, reflecting both fear and the triumph of survival against the odds, forever altering the dynamic of her relationship with Kate.
