What Is 4:44 About?
The premise of 4:44 without spoilers.
This work interweaves two distinct performances, exploring themes of desire, pain, and regret. First, dancers Storyboard P and Okwui Okpokwasili present a moving two-part dance. Then, Beyoncé and Jay-Z share a live performance, seemingly serenading each other. The visual work complements Jay-Z’s song “4:44,” often interpreted as an apology to Beyoncé for past infidelity and emotional shortcomings. Created by Arthur Jafa, Malik Sayeed, and Elissa Blount Moorhead, it uses choreography, cinematography, and found footage to examine masculinity and Black love and life.
