White Lily 2016

Tokiko, a renowned ceramic artist, and her husband welcome Haruka, a teenage runaway, into their home and studio, offering guidance in the quiet art of shaping clay while Haruka adapts to a new life and a different pace. After Tokiko’s husband dies, Haruka stays by her teacher’s side, pledging to remain and to do anything asked of her. What begins as a mentor–student arrangement slowly deepens into something more intimate, and a quiet, clandestine bond forms between them. Tokiko’s sorrow and longing are momentarily tempered by Haruka’s presence, even as Tokiko turns to alcohol and slips into a string of casual, meaningless encounters with men that Haruka can hear from the next room.

In the meantime, Tokiko invites Satoru, a bright young student, to become her apprentice and soon initiates a sexual relationship with him, despite his insistence that he has a girlfriend. Satoru’s curiosity about Haruka grows, and he begins to flirt with her in ways that feel urgent and reckless, especially given their shared age. Tokiko discovers the tension between them and confronts Haruka, accusing her of subverting expectations and implying that Haruka prefers men. The tension erupts into a charged scene in which Tokiko’s presence is palpable as the two younger figures are compelled into an act on a table in front of her.

Things spiral further when Satoru’s girlfriend Akane uncovers the affair. She seizes a large kitchen knife in a moment of despair, threatening to harm herself. In the chaos that follows, Satoru intervenes and Akane cuts him. She then charges at Tokiko, knife in hand, but Haruka throws herself into the line of danger, stepping between them and receiving a stab to the stomach. The studio, once a sanctuary for clay and conversation, becomes a site of fear, ruptured trust, and the precarious lines between art, desire, and protection.

Six months pass, and Haruka returns to Tokiko’s atelier, carrying the weight of what happened but choosing to rejoin the space they share. The two women come together again, their relationship renewed in the quiet, complicated aftermath, as they navigate what it means to heal, to belong, and to seek connection through a shared craft, even after such a perilous confrontation.
