In 1920, Jaidev Verma Aftab Shivdasani, a famous poet, lives as a solitary figure because he cannot reach the love of his life, Smriti Tia Bajpai. Their bond begins through a heartfelt exchange of letters, and what starts as poetic correspondence soon blooms into a quiet, enduring affection. When a letter arrives revealing that Smriti has died in an accident, Jaidev’s world tilts, and his sister Karuna Vidya Malvade becomes the steady, living presence that tries to keep him grounded.
Karuna’s sense of duty is tested when Jaidev discovers an unconscious girl by a lake and brings her into their home. Upon waking, the girl remembers nothing about her past except Jaidev’s poems, and she is named Sangeeta. Karuna grows increasingly wary of this stranger, especially after an undertaker warns that a malevolent spirit might be trapped inside her. Yet Jaidev feels a profound pull toward her, insisting she stay, convinced there is a connection between Sangeeta and Smriti. The mystery deepens as Sangeeta experiences terrifying phenomena—vomiting iron nails and seeing ghosts in her room—signs that a restless presence has claimed her.
As they seek medical help, Sangeeta is inexplicably possessed, and only the cemetery keeper offers a way forward. He warns that the spirit is vengeful and must be guided back to the place where the tragedy began: Amar’s residence in Shimla. Jaidev’s obligation to Sangeeta deepens, and he leans on the idea that she is Smriti, his lost love, trying to return to him. To uncover the truth, Jaidev travels to Smriti’s former address and learns that Karuna had already visited seeking answers. The revelation shatters him: Karuna’s letters reveal a brutal truth about his closest companion, Amar Sharad Kelkar.
Amar, a man who envied Jaidev’s fame, had assaulted Karuna and, upon discovering Jaidev’s love for Smriti, had masqueraded as Jaidev to abduct Smriti and bring her to his Shimla residence. Smriti, however, saw through the deception and confronted Amar, tragically killing him in self-defense. The lingering spirit of Amar now occupies Smriti’s body, setting the stage for a perilous exorcism. The cemetery keeper cautions that only a deceitful move—moving the spirit to the exact place where the wrong occurred and forcing it to confront its own past—can end this haunting. Smriti must be kept unaware of where she’s being taken, or the spirit will gain access to her again.
With Smriti unconscious and wrapped in sacred cloth, Jaidev, Karuna, and the keeper make their way to Amar’s house. A misstep—the cloth slides away from Smriti’s face when the keeper trips—awakens the vengeful spirit. In a brutal, otherworldly confrontation, the possessed Smriti murders everyone except Jaidev. Wounded and desperate, Jaidev faces Amar’s wrath as the spirit in Smriti’s body burns Amar’s corpse, attempting to remain tethered to the mortal world through her.
Jaidev pleads with the spirit to end the torment by killing him, reasoning that Smriti’s life is the only true mercy left for her. Amar’s spirit refuses, revealing that his intent was always to make Jaidev suffer. In a final, macabre twist, Jaidev uncovers a hidden corpse in the ceiling—the actual Amar—whose reanimated presence forces a deadly confrontation. The corpse lunges at Smriti, but Jaidev intervenes and ultimately sets Amar’s corpse ablaze, breaking the curse and freeing Smriti’s body from the spirit’s hold.
In the aftermath, the bond between Jaidev and Smriti is reaffirmed through marriage, and the couple’s union is consummated, signifying a hopeful new start after a night of fear, revelation, and redemption.
