Yoshiyuki Momose

Yoshiyuki Momose is a veteran Japanese animator and director whose career spans over four decades, beginning in the early 1980s and continuing to the present day. Born on November 29, 1953, in Tokyo, Japan, Momose entered the animation industry during a transformative period for Japanese anime, quickly distinguishing himself with a meticulous eye for layout and key animation. His early work included contributions to television series and feature films, but his breakthrough arrived when he was recruited by Studio Ghibli in 1988 to assist with the emotionally resonant Grave of the Fireflies. At Ghibli, Momose honed his craft on a series of landmark projects, providing key animation for Porco Rosso, Whisper of the Heart, and the internationally acclaimed Spirited Away, each showcasing his ability to blend fluid motion with nuanced character expression. In 2004, Momose stepped behind the camera as a director, debuting with two short films, Portable Airport and Space Station No. 9, which demonstrated his versatility beyond animation. The following year he founded his own boutique studio, Studio Kajino, allowing him to pursue independent projects while maintaining his ties to Ghibli. Momose’s influence extended into the world of video games, where he served as character designer, cut‑scene animation director, and storyboard artist for the beloved Ni no Kuni series, first on the Nintendo DS and later on PlayStation platforms, earning praise for his richly detailed art style and narrative cohesion. In 2019 he directed NiNoKuni at OLM, Inc., further cementing his reputation as a cross‑media storyteller. Most recently, Momose was announced as the director of the Studio Ponoc adaptation of A.F. Harrold’s novel The Imaginary, which premiered on December 15, 2023, reaffirming his continued relevance and creative vigor in contemporary animation.
