Born in Hanover, New Hampshire, Dey is widely recognized for his commendable contributions to the American film industry. His remarkable credits include successful films such as Shanghai Noon, Showtime, Failure to Launch, and Marmaduke, films that have resonated significantly with audiences and have earned notable acknowledgment in the industry. His unique style, coupled with his formal education from prestigious institutions such as Brown University and the American Film Institute in Los Angeles, have positioned him as a respected authority in the cinematic field.

Dey, the son of Phoebe Ann Evans and Charles Frederick Dey, found his bearings in the industry by shooting a speculative commercial reel, which earned him a position at Ridley Scott Associates. His father, who was an Associate Dean at Dartmouth College from 1963 to 1973 and headmaster of Choate Rosemary Hall, likely played a crucial role in shaping Dey's worldview and approach to his craft.
