Ritesh Batra

Ritesh Batra is an Indian film director and screenwriter whose work has earned international acclaim for its subtle storytelling and visual poetry. Born on 12 June 1979 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, he grew up in a middle‑class family; his father Joginder served in the Indian Merchant Navy while his mother Manju managed the household, and his elder sister Radhika later launched a tea business. After completing his secondary education at AVM High School, Batra pursued an economics degree at Drake University in Iowa and subsequently worked as a consultant for Deloitte, a tenure that lasted three years before he returned to his childhood passion for cinema. Although he briefly enrolled at New York University’s film school, he left without a formal degree, choosing instead to hone his craft through short‑form projects and industry labs. Batra’s early career was marked by a string of inventive short films, most notably the Arabic‑language Café Regular, Cairo, which screened at more than forty festivals and collected over a dozen awards, including the Critics Prize (FIPRESCI) at Oberhausen. His participation in the Sundance Screenwriters and Directors Lab and the Time Warner Storytelling Fellowship further refined his narrative voice. In 2011 he returned to Mumbai to document the city’s lunchbox delivery system, a research project that blossomed into his breakthrough feature The Lunchbox (2013). The film premiered in Cannes Critics’ Week, won the Rail d’Or, and sparked a competitive bidding war that led Sony Pictures Classics to acquire North American rights. The Lunchbox became the highest‑grossing foreign film in North America, Europe and Australia in 2014, earning over US$25 million and garnering nominations such as the BAFTA for Best Film Not in the English Language. Following this success, Batra directed the English‑language adaptation The Sense of an Ending (2017), based on Julian Barnes’s Booker‑winning novel, and released the Netflix original Our Souls at Night the same year. His most recent feature, Photograph (2019), continues his exploration of ordinary lives infused with quiet emotion. In 2014 he founded PoeticLicense Motion Pictures, a production company dedicated to nurturing diverse stories, and he remains an active figure in both Indian and international cinema, with his films repeatedly recognized at festivals ranging from Odesa to Reykjavik.
