Rintaro

Rintodo, better known by his pseudonym Rintaro, was born Shigeyuki Hayashi on January 22, 1941 in Tokyo, Japan, and has become one of the most influential figures in Japanese animation. Beginning his career at the tender age of 17, he entered the industry as an in‑between animator on Toei Animation’s historic 1958 film Hakujaden, quickly gaining experience that would shape his future direction. After contributing to two additional Toei projects, he moved to the legendary Mushi Productions, where he collaborated directly with the iconic Osamu Tezuka on seminal works such as Kimba the White Lion and Astro Boy, even directing the fourth episode of the 1963 Astro Boy series. In 1971 he left Mushi to become a freelancer, a decision that allowed him to explore a wide array of television series and feature films, ultimately co‑founding the renowned studio Madhouse while still retaining his independent status. His passion for science‑fiction, westerns, film‑noir, and French cinema infuses his storytelling, culminating in masterpieces like the award‑winning Metropolis (2001), which earned a Best Film nomination at the Sitges Film Festival and captured the spirit of Tezuka’s original manga. Rintaro’s work has been recognized with honors such as the Netizen’s Choice Award at the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival (1998) and a second‑place finish for Best Animation Film at Fant‑Asia (2001). Beyond directing, he has served as a founding member of the Japanese Animation Creators Association (JAniCA), lectured at Kyoto Seika University, and continued to innovate into his eighties, as shown by the 2023 short Nezumikozō Jirokichi which premiered at the Niigata International Animation Film Festival. His brother, Masayuki Hayashi, also a noted director, highlights a family legacy within the anime industry, though some sources mistakenly conflate the two names. Rintaro’s enduring legacy is marked by a blend of artistic vision, industry activism, and a lifelong commitment to the evolution of animated storytelling.
