What's After the Movie
Renuka Shahane (born 7 October 1966 in Mumbai, Maharashtra) is a celebrated Indian actress, film director and screenwriter best known for her versatile work across Hindi and Marathi cinema as well as television. Born to Lt. Cdr. Vijay Kumar Shahane of the Indian Navy and distinguished theatre critic Shanta Gokhale, Renuka grew up in a Marathi‑speaking household after her parents' separation and her mother’s subsequent marriage to filmmaker Arun Khopkar, which also ended in divorce. She completed a B.A. in Psychology at St. Xavier’s College and pursued postgraduate studies in Clinical Psychology at the University of Mumbai, while simultaneously nurturing a passion for performing arts that would soon define her career. Her screen debut came with the Marathi film Hach Sunbaicha Bhau, but it was the iconic Doordarshan travel series Surabhi (1993‑2001), which she co‑hosted, that catapulted her into the national spotlight, earning her a reputation for a warm smile and relatable presence during the era of a single television channel. Following the success of Surabhi, Renuka earned a coveted role in the blockbuster Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994), further cementing her status as a beloved on‑screen personality. She won critical acclaim for her lead performance in the Marathi film Aboli, securing the Filmfare Award Marathi for Best Actress in 1995, and later expanded her artistic footprint by directing the Marathi feature Rita, adapted from her mother’s novel Rita Welingkar, where she also acted as a guiding mentor to the protagonist. Her filmography spans Hindi, Marathi and even Telugu cinema, including the Ram Gopal Varma‑produced hit Money. Off‑screen, Renuka’s personal life includes two marriages—first to Marathi theatre writer Vijay Kenkare and later to actor Ashutosh Rana—with whom she has two sons, Shauryaman and Satyendra. An outspoken atheist, she continues to be active in the industry from 1988 to the present, contributing as an actress, director and writer while championing contemporary Indian storytelling.
