Ranald MacDougall

Ranald MacDougall (March 10, 1915 – December 12, 1973) was an American screenwriter and film director whose work helped shape mid‑century Hollywood drama. Born in Schenectady, New York, to a working‑class family, he left school before completing the eighth grade to support his father Harald L. MacDougall, a crane operator and union organizer, during a series of labor strikes. After a series of odd jobs—including ushering at Radio City Music Hall, delivering messages for Western Union, and even fishing in Florida—he began writing poetry and short scripts in his spare time, some of which were published while he was still a teenager. In 1936 MacDougall secured a position as a continuity writer for NBC Radio, where his talent quickly earned him assignments on programs such as The World's Best and Defense for America, and he later contributed to CBS’s wartime series The Man Behind the Gun. His radio experience opened the door to Hollywood in 1944, when Warner Bros. signed him to write feature‑film screenplays; among his most celebrated credits are Mildred Pierce (1945), The Unsuspected (1947), June Bride (1948) and The Naked Jungle (1954), and he shared screenwriting duties on the epic Cleopatra (1963). MacDougall also stepped behind the camera, directing Man on Fire (1957) starring Bing Crosby and The World, the Flesh and the Devil (1959), both of which featured a young Inger Stevens. Beyond his creative output, he served the writing community as President of the Writers Guild of America West from 1971 until his sudden death of a heart attack in Pacific Palisades, California, in 1973. His personal life was marked by two marriages—first to Lucille Brophy, with whom he had three children, and later to actress Nanette Fabray, the mother of his fourth child—cementing his legacy as both a prolific storyteller and a dedicated family man.
