Joachim Trier

Joachim Trier (born 1 March 1974) is a Danish-born Norwegian filmmaker, hailed for his deeply introspective and poignant films. His works, often shrouded in melancholy, explore existential dilemmas on love, ambition, memory, and identity. Trier's artistry has earned him a place in the elite circle of filmmakers, amassing prestigious nominations including for an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, two Cesar Awards, and three Cannes Film Festival Awards.

One of his offerings to the world of cinema is the celebrated Oslo trilogy which consists of Reprise (2006), Oslo, August 31st (2011), and The Worst Person in the World (2021). He also extends his repertoire with other critically acclaimed works such as Louder Than Bombs (2015), Thelma (2017), and a documentary, The Other Munch (2018). Born in Denmark to Norwegian parents, Trier's cinematic journey initiated with his ventures into short films. His directorial debut, Reprise, won Norway's top film awards, the Amanda Award and the Aamot Statuette. Further international recognition followed when he was named one of Variety's '10 Directors to Watch' in 2007.

Multi-faceted, Trier was also recognized as a skilled documentarian with his co-direction of the film, The Other Munch. The 55-minute documentary showcases writer Karl Ove Knausgård curating an exhibition of paintings by Edvard Munch at Oslo's Munch Museum. Alongside his filmmaking, Trier has also taken prestigious roles such as jury member for the 'Cinéfondation' and short-film sections of the 2014 Cannes Film Festival and the Jury President of the Critics' Week section at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.
