Jim Sheridan is an acclaimed Irish filmmaker and playwright, born on 6 February 1949 in Dublin, Ireland. He is known for his critically lauded films set in Ireland that contributed significantly to the Irish cinematic landscape. Sheridan's notable works include My Left Foot (1989), The Field (1990), In the Name of the Father (1993), The Boxer (1997), In America (2003), and Brothers (2009). Among his accomplishments, Sheridan has received six Academy Award nominations. Prior to helming his directorial ventures, Sheridan was active as a theatre artist in his student days. He co-wrote and staged several plays with his brother, playwright Peter Sheridan, in the late 1970s as part of the Project Theatre Company.

He also served as the artistic director of the Irish Arts Center in New York. Returning to Ireland in the late 1980s, Sheridan's directorial debut with the film My Left Foot was a widespread success and won Daniel Day-Lewis and Brenda Fricker Academy Awards. His body of work also features collaborations with leading actors such as Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman, and more. In addition to directing, Sheridan has made significant contributions as a screenplay writer, earning him nominations for best original and adapted screenplay at prestigious award ceremonies.
