Gregory James Nava, an American filmmaker of Mexican and Basque descent, was born on April 10, 1949 in San Diego, California. He attended St. Augustine High School before pursuing a Master of Fine Arts at UCLA Film School, where his short The Journal of Diego Rodriguez Silva earned the Best Dramatic Film Award at the National Student Film Festival. Nava’s first feature, The Confessions of Amans (1976), captured the Gold Hugo for Best First Feature at the Chicago International Film Festival, signaling the arrival of a bold new voice in independent cinema. Throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s he honed his craft as both writer and director, culminating in the critically acclaimed El Norte (1983), a film that not only secured an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay but also earned a place in the National Film Registry in 1995. His partnership with screenwriter Anna Thomas, his first wife, produced a string of socially resonant works, including My Family and the biographical screenplay for Frida. In 1997 Nava directed Selena, a biopic that launched Jennifer Lopez into stardom and earned him an ALMA Award for Outstanding Latino Director. He continued to explore complex narratives with Bordertown (2006), a political thriller set against the backdrop of the Ciudad Juárez murders, and later expanded into television with the PBS series American Family: Journey of Dreams. Across his career Nava has been lauded with numerous international honors, from the Grand Prix des Amériques at Montréal to multiple ALMA and Impact Awards, reflecting his enduring commitment to stories that illuminate the Latino experience.
