Eugène Green

Eugène Green (born 28 June 1947) is an American‑born French filmmaker, dramatist, writer and educator whose work bridges cinema, theatre and music with a deep fascination for baroque aesthetics. Raised in New York City, Green moved to France where he became a central figure in the revival of French baroque theatre technique and declamation, training a whole generation of actors in the precise physicality and vocal articulation of the 17th‑century stage. His interdisciplinary approach blends the rigor of classical drama with contemporary storytelling, resulting in films that feel both timeless and strikingly modern. Green’s early stage productions, such as Jean Racine: Mithridate at the Sorbonne (1999) and Pierre Corneille: Le Cid in Avignon and Paris (1995), earned him a reputation as a master director capable of coaxing nuanced performances from his collaborators.
