Douglas Hickox

Douglas Arthur Hickox (10 January 1929 – 25 July 1988) was an English film and television director whose career spanned almost four decades, from the early 1950s until his untimely death in 1988. Born in London and educated at Emanuel School, he entered the industry at age 17 as an office boy at Pinewood Studios, earning a modest thirty bob a week before quickly moving into assistant‑director roles on a variety of B‑movies, musical shorts and jazz‑pop featurettes. Throughout the 1950s and early‑60s he honed his craft as a third‑, second‑ and first‑assistant director on titles such as The Invisible Man (TV series) and Fiend Without a Face, gaining a reputation for efficiency and a keen eye for action sequences. In 1966 he achieved recognition for his television commercials, winning several awards at the Venice International Advertising Film Congress, which cemented his status as a leading director of TV advertising. His first major feature, Entertaining Mr Sloane (1970), was financed after he partnered with a producer who secured the rights, and it marked the beginning of a prolific period during which he directed cult classics like Theatre of Blood (1973), Brannigan (1975), Sky Riders (1976) and Zulu Dawn (1979). Hickox described himself as an “interpretive” and “narrative” director, insisting that audiences should become fully immersed in the story without being aware of the director’s hand. Over the next ten years he cultivated a distinctive style noted for wit, tight pacing and taut action, while also directing a range of television movies and mini‑series in the 1980s. His legacy is honoured by the Douglas Hickox Award, established by the British Independent Film Awards in 1998 to recognize outstanding debut directors, reflecting his lifelong commitment to nurturing new talent.
