Charles Shyer

Charles Richard Shyer, an influential figure in the film industry, was born on October 11, 1941. He is renowned for his exemplary work as a film director, screenwriter, and producer, excelling predominantly in comedy genres. His creative mind is behind notable films like Private Benjamin (1980), Irreconcilable Differences (1984), Baby Boom (1987), Father of the Bride (1991 and 1995), The Parent Trap (1998), The Affair of the Necklace (2001), and Alfie (2004). Los Angeles, California, is his birthplace, where he developed a passion for film through his father, Melville Shyer, who was among the founders of the Directors Guild of America and a renowned figure in the industry. After attending UCLA, Shyer got an apprenticeship with the Directors Guild, which helped shape his successful career.

The film industry then embraced Shyer when he became head writer and associate producer of the popular TV series The Odd Couple in the early seventies. He transitioned to feature films by earning his first writing credit on Smokey and the Bandit (1977), got his first Writers Guild of America nomination in 1978, and won the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Original Comedy for Private Benjamin in 1979. His directorial debut, Irreconcilable Differences, received multiple awards and nominations. He then directed the box office hit Father of the Bride and it's sequel. Shyer continued his success through the late 90s and early 2000s with The Parent Trap and Alfie, respectively. Latest in Charles' endeavor was announced in 2012 where he wrote and directed the online fashion film Ieri Oggi Domani and he is currently working on a Netflix project - The Noel Diary.
