William Jeffrey

William Jeffrey (born 6 December 1892 in Kilmarnock, Scotland) was a pioneering figure in American soccer whose career spanned more than three decades and left an indelible imprint on the sport’s development in the United States. After emigrating to the U.S. as a teenager, Jeffrey pursued higher education at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a degree in physical education and began coaching local amateur teams, quickly earning a reputation for tactical acumen and an ability to inspire under‑dog squads. In 1925 he accepted the position of head coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions, a role he would occupy until 1959, guiding the program to multiple collegiate championships and fostering a generation of players who would become the backbone of early U.S. national teams.
