William Harrigan

William Harrigan (March 27, 1894 – February 1, 1966) was a prolific American actor whose career spanned stage, screen, and vaudeville during the first half of the twentieth century. Born in New York City into one of the oldest theatrical dynasties in America, he was the son of celebrated actor Edward Harrigan and the grandson of composer David Braham, giving him a pedigree that traced back to performances in 1660. Harrigan entered the world of drama at the tender age of five, joining his father in the production Reilly and the 400 at the Garrick Theatre, and later attended the disciplined New York Military Academy. During World I he served as a captain in the 307th Infantry Regiment of the 77th Division, an experience that temporarily paused his artistic pursuits but enriched his presence onstage. After the war he returned to New York, appearing in productions such as Bought and Paid For and Springtime, and even toured Australia in 1915 with a company led by Charles Millward, showcasing his versatility early on. His Broadway breakthrough came with Old Lavender (1906), and he continued to shape the New York stage by originating roles in notable works, including the captain in the acclaimed hit Mister Roberts, a production co‑written and directed by his brother‑in‑law Joshua Logan. Transitioning to Hollywood, Harrigan made his film debut in 1917 and built a solid screen résumé that featured titles such as Born Reckless, Cabaret, The Invisible Man (1933) where he portrayed Dr. Arthur Kemp, and the musical comedy Nix on Dames. A skilled vaudeville performer, he delighted audiences with Irish ballads at the Palace Theatre in 1927 and led the summer stock company at Denver’s Elitch Theatre in 1929. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s he remained a reliable character actor in both supporting and secondary leads, appearing in films like G Men and The Farmer’s Daughter. Married three times—to Dorothy Langdon, Louise Groody, and finally Grace Culbert—Harrigan continued working into the late 1950s before passing away in his native New York City on February 1, 1966, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to the performing arts.
