What's After the Movie
Wally Cassell (born Oswaldo Silvestri Trippilini Rolando Vincenza Castellano on March 3, 1912 in Agrigento, Sicily) was an Italian‑born American character actor whose career spanned more than six decades in film, television, and later business. The son of Luigi and Luisa Castellano, he emigrated with his family to the United States at the age of two, growing up in Brooklyn where he first pursued a path as a dancer before turning his attention to the stage and screen. Encouraged by a childhood friend, the legendary Mickey Rooney, Cassell changed his name to the more marketable Wally Cassell and received his first screen test and MGM contract, launching a prolific period of supporting roles in classic Hollywood productions such as The Thin Man Goes Home (1945), The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946), White Heat (1949) and the film noir Quicksand (1950) alongside Rooney himself. Beyond the silver screen, Cassell became a familiar face on early television, appearing in syndicated Westerns like Stories of the Century and Rescue 8, and guest‑starring on popular series including Gunsmoke, The Untouchables, Rawhide and The Beverly Hillbillies. In 1964 he retired from acting and successfully transitioned to business, maintaining an active professional life until 2006. Cassell married actress and singer Marcy McGuire in 1947, a union that lasted until his death; the couple raised one daughter, Cindy Cassell, who followed in her parents' footsteps with a role in Disney’s Emil and the Detectives (1964). Wally Cassell lived to the remarkable age of 103, passing away at his home in Palm Desert, California, on April 2, 2015. His long and varied career reflects the classic journey of an immigrant who helped shape mid‑century American cinema and television.
