What's After the Movie
Troy Garity (born July 7, 1973) is an American actor whose career spans more than four decades, beginning with an infant appearance in his parents' Vietnam travelogue Introduction to the Enemy (1974). He was born in Los Angeles, California, to celebrated actress and activist Jane Fonda and prominent anti‑war activist Tom Hayden, and was given the surname Garity from his paternal grandmother. His first name honors the Vietnamese martyr Nguyễn Văn Trỗi, reflecting his parents' deep political convictions. Growing up in Santa Monica, Garity was exposed to the worlds of film and activism, cultivating a dual heritage that would shape his later projects. Through his mother he is the grandson of legendary actor Henry Fonda and socialite Frances Ford Seymour, making him a nephew of Peter Fonda and a cousin of Bridget Fonda, while his father's lineage adds Irish ancestry to his multicultural background. Garity trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City and performed with the Academy Repertory Company before breaking into mainstream cinema. His breakout role came as Isaac Rosenberg in Barbershop (2002), a performance that earned him recognition and led to two sequels, Barbershop 2: Back in Business (2004) and Barbershop: The Next Cut (2016), where he appeared in a cameo. He portrayed the tragic real‑life figure Barry Winchell in the television movie Soldier's Girl (2003), garnering a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Miniseries or Television Film. Other notable credits include Sunshine (2007), where he starred alongside Danny Boyle and Alex Garland, and the drama Lake City (2008). In addition to acting, Garity is a dedicated activist, founding the Peace Process Network and chairing Homies Unidos, a Los Angeles‑based gang‑violence‑prevention organization. He married actress Simone Bent in 2007; the couple has no publicly reported children.
