What's After the Movie
Thomas M. Wright is an Australian actor, writer, director, producer and theatre designer born on 22 June 1983 in Melbourne. From a young age he gravitated toward performance, attending Carey Baptist Grammar School before launching his professional career in 1998. He co‑founded the avant‑garde theatre company Black Lung in 2006 with Thomas Henning, and under that banner produced critically acclaimed works such as Avast and the ambitious, four‑year‑long production Doku Rai, which was developed on Atauro Island in East Timor with local artists and former resistance fighters. Wright’s work with Black Lung earned the company a reputation as one of the most influential Australian theatre collectives of the decade, collaborating with major festivals and institutions including the Adelaide Festival, Belvoir and Queensland Theatre. As a stage actor he tackled demanding roles, notably the title character in Simon Stone’s controversial Baal for the Malthouse Theatre, a production commissioned by Cate Blanchett and Andrew Upton. Transitioning to screen, Wright first gained international notice in Disney Channel movies Stepsister From Planet Weird and Zenon: The Zequel, before delivering a breakout performance as Johnno Mitcham in Jane Campion’s acclaimed series Top of the Lake, which earned him a Critics’ Choice Awards nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He later appeared in the US adaptation of The Bridge, the disaster film Everest (2015), and the World War II thriller The Man With The Iron Heart (2016), consistently receiving praise for his intensity and versatility. Wright’s directorial debut, Acute Misfortune (2019), a biopic of artist Adam Cullen, garnered multiple awards including The Age Critics’ Prize and a five‑star review from The Guardian, solidifying his reputation as a compelling filmmaker. His second feature, The Stranger (2022), starring Joel Edgerton and Sean Harris, premiered at Cannes and was shortlisted for the Betty Ronald Prize for Scriptwriting, further confirming his status as a leading voice in contemporary Australian cinema.
