Tessie O'Shea

Tessie O'Shea, born Teresa Mary O'Shea on 13 March 1913 in Cardiff, Glamorgan, Wales, was a prodigious Welsh entertainer who entered the world of performance at the tender age of six, billed as The Wonder of Wales. Raised in a household with Irish roots—her father James Peter O'Shea was a former soldier and newspaper wholesaler—she was steeped in the British music‑hall tradition, quickly mastering singing, banjolele playing and comic timing. By her teens she was already a familiar voice on BBC Radio, and her stage career spanned continents, taking her from Britain’s variety theatres to the stages of South Africa. In the 1930s she embraced the nickname “Two Ton Tessie from Tennessee,” a playful nod to her robust physique that became a beloved part of her act, often concluding performances with lively banjolele numbers à la George Formby. The post‑war era saw her headline at the London Palladium and launch a successful recording career in the 1950s, cementing her status as one of Britain’s most endearing entertainers. In 1963 Noël Coward crafted the role of the fish‑and‑chips peddler Ada Cockle especially for her in the Broadway musical The Girl Who Came to Supper, a performance that earned her a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. Her television fame exploded after a 1964 appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, where she shared the bill with the Beatles, drawing the largest audience in American TV history at that time. The following years brought an Emmy nomination for her supporting role in the TV movie The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and she entertained American troops in Vietnam during the 1970‑71 holiday season. O'Shea continued to appear in films such as London Town, The Blue Lamp, The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming and Disney’s Bedknobs and Broomsticks, while also delighting audiences on BBC’s The Good Old Days and the short‑lived sitcom As Good Cooks Go. She retired from active performance in 1985 and later settled in East Lake Weir, Florida, where she died of congestive heart failure on 21 April 1995 at age 82. Her legacy endures through the 2011 BBC Two documentary Two Ton Tessie! and the fond memories of a career that spanned over six decades, blending comedy, music, and unmistakable charm.
