Sverrir Þór Sverrisson

Sverrir Þór Sverrisson (born 23 May 1975 in Reykjanesbær, Iceland) is a highly respected figure in Icelandic basketball, known both for his tenacious defensive play and his successful coaching career. Standing 187 cm tall, he began his senior playing career in 1994 with Snæfell before moving through several top‑tier clubs including Keflavík, Njarðvík and Tindastóll, ultimately retiring from top‑level competition in 2010 while still appearing for lower‑division sides until 2016. During his playing years he was twice honored as Úrvalsdeild karla Defensive Player of the Year (2003, 2004), captured three consecutive Icelandic championships (2003‑2005), and added two Icelandic Basketball Cups (2003, 2004) to his résumé, establishing himself as one of the league’s most reliable centers. Internationally, Sverrir earned eight caps for the Icelandic men’s national team between 2002 and 2003, contributing his defensive expertise on the court. After hanging up his jersey, he transitioned seamlessly into coaching, first guiding Njarðvík’s women’s team to a national championship in 2012 and later taking the helm of Keflavík’s women’s squad, where he secured both the Icelandic Basketball Cup and the championship in 2017. His coaching resume expanded to the men’s side of Keflavík, Grindavík and he briefly served as assistant coach before returning to lead Keflavík’s women’s team to a double triumph of championship and cup in the 2023‑2024 season, after which he announced his retirement from coaching. In addition to club success, Sverrir served as head coach of the Icelandic women’s national team from 2012 to 2014, guiding them to a silver medal at the 2013 Games of the Small States of Europe. His individual accolades as a coach include Úrvalsdeild karla Coach of the Year (2013) and Úrvalsdeild kvenna Coach of the Year (2012), underscoring his ability to develop winning cultures on both sides of the gender divide. Throughout his career, Sverrir has been celebrated for his strategic acumen, player development skills, and unwavering commitment to Icelandic basketball, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to inspire future generations.
