Sonny Chorre

Joseph Vance Chorre Jr., professionally celebrated as Suni War Cloud and also known by the nickname Sonny Chorre, was born on November 14, 1914, in Los Angeles, California, into a family deeply rooted in the entertainment industry and Native American heritage. His mother, Gertrude Chorre, was a noted actress of Luiseño descent, and his sister Marie Chorte also pursued acting, creating an environment where performance and artistic expression were integral to daily life from an early age. Chorre attended Sherman Indian High School in Riverside, California, where he developed considerable athletic prowess, particularly distinguishing himself as a marathon runner, demonstrating the physical stamina, endurance, and discipline that would later define his professional wrestling career. Before entering the ring, he immersed himself in his indigenous heritage, which would become a cornerstone of his professional persona, and he received rigorous training from fellow wrestler and actor Mike Mazurki, preparing him for the physically demanding world of professional wrestling. Legendary Olympic athlete Jim Thorpe later served as his manager, bringing additional prestige and visibility to his burgeoning career in the squared circle and helping to establish him as a prominent figure in the wrestling territories. Making his professional wrestling debut in 1947, Chorre performed under numerous ring names including Chief Suni War Cloud, Chief War Cloud, Chief Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, and Steven Crazy Horse, though Suni War Cloud remained his most recognized and enduring moniker throughout his extensive two-decade career in the sport. Standing at an imposing 6 feet 2 inches and weighing 231 pounds, he cut an impressive and formidable figure in the ring, often performing a traditional rain dance before his bouts, a ritual that connected his athletic performance to his cultural heritage and captivated audiences across various wrestling territories. Throughout his active years from 1947 to 1969, he achieved significant championship success, capturing the NWA Southwestern Tag Team Championship twice with partner Jerry Woods, the NWA World Tag Team Championship (Idaho & Utah version) twice with Chief Kit Fox, the NWA Idaho Heavyweight Championship, and the NWA Western Tag Team Championship with Rey Urbano. Beyond his accomplishments in wrestling, Chorre pursued acting with dedication, frequently appearing in Hollywood films, often in uncredited roles alongside his mother and sister, contributing to the representation of Native American characters in mid-20th century cinema during a period of evolving portrayals in American film. His personal life included two significant marriages: first to Scottish-born actress Lillian Douglas around 1950, with whom he had two sons, Gary Stewart and Ronald James, before their divorce in November 1954, and later to Anna Bell Spears, a U.S. Army nurse who served during the Korean War, in 1961, remaining with her until his death in Los Angeles on June 14, 1987, at the age of 72.
