What's After the Movie
Sibel Kekilli was born on 16 June 1980 in Heilbronn, West Germany, into a family of Turkish immigrants who arrived in 1977. After graduating with excellent grades at sixteen, she entered a rigorous 30‑month programme to become a certified public‑administration specialist and subsequently worked as an administrative assistant for Heilbronn city hall. Seeking broader experiences, she moved to Essen where she held a variety of jobs—including bouncer, cleaner, waitress, nightclub manager, and saleswoman—before briefly entering the adult film industry in 2001‑2002. Her transition to mainstream cinema began serendipitously in a Cologne shopping mall when a casting director spotted her, leading to an audition for the critically acclaimed film Head‑On (2004). Against 350 contenders, Kekilli secured the lead role, a performance that demanded physical and emotional endurance, even requiring an appendectomy during filming in Turkey. The film’s success catapulted her into the German spotlight, earning her a Bambi award for “best shooting star” and sparking a media controversy when her former pornographic work was publicised, which caused a painful rift with her parents.
Following Head‑On, Kekilli built a diverse portfolio, starring in the Turkish drama Home Coming (2006) and the Holocaust‑related The Last Train the same year, both of which garnered festival accolades. Her portrayal of a Turkish mother in When We Leave earned her a Lola for Best Actress in 2010. Internationally, she is perhaps best known for embodying Shae in HBO’s Game of Thrones (2011‑2019), a role that introduced her to a global audience. From 2011 to 2017 she was a regular investigator, Sarah Brandt, on the long‑running German crime series Tatort, showcasing her range beyond ethnically stereotyped characters. Aside from acting, Kekilli is an outspoken activist, supporting Terre des Femmes and delivering a celebrated speech on honor‑based violence in 2015, for which she was named “Author of Freedom” by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation. She currently resides in Hamburg and continues to champion women’s rights while pursuing selective film projects.
