Shûichirô Moriyama

Shūichirō Moriyama (born Hiroo Ōtsuka) was a prolific Japanese actor and voice actor whose career spanned more than six decades, from his debut in 1957 until his death in 2021. Born on 26 July 1934 in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, he began his journey in post‑war Japanese cinema, quickly earning recognition for his versatile vocal talent and commanding screen presence. Over the years Moriyama became especially renowned as the official Japanese dubbing artist for several legendary international stars, including Telly Savalas, Jean Gabin, Spencer Tracy, and Lino Ventura, a role that cemented his reputation as a bridge between Hollywood and Japanese audiences. His dubbing work was celebrated for capturing the nuanced gravitas of these performers, and he frequently met Savalas in person, a testament to his status within the dubbing community. In addition to his extensive dubbing résumé, Moriyama appeared in notable domestic productions such as the television drama Furuhata Ninzaburō (episode 10) and the long‑running series Ōedo Sōsamō and The Samurai. His film appearances include Shall We Dance? (1996) as Ryo Kishikawa, Salaryman Kintaro (1999) as Genzo Oshima, and Tsuribaka Nisshi Eleven (2000) as Horita. He also lent his voice to beloved anime and animated features, portraying characters like the poet in Nutcracker Fantasy (1979), King Gourmeth in Dragon Ball: Curse of the Blood Rubies (1986), and Porco Rosso in Miyazaki’s Porco Rosso (1992). His contributions to video game voice work include roles in Kingdom Hearts (2002) as Flotsam and Jetsam, Final Fantasy Type‑0 (2011) as Cid Aulstyne, and Inazuma Eleven (2008) as Hibiki Seigou. On 23 July 1999, Moriyama suffered a severe cerebral infarction that left the right side of his body paralysed; despite intensive rehabilitation, he endured persistent neurological challenges until his passing from pneumonia on 8 February 2021 at the age of 86. His enduring legacy is reflected in the breadth of his performances across film, television, animation, and dubbing, marking him as one of Japan’s most respected vocal and acting talents.
