Sheila Sim

Sheila Beryl Grant Sim (5 June 1922 – 19 January 2016) was a distinguished English film and theatre actress whose career spanned the vibrant post‑war era of British cinema. Born in Liverpool, Lancashire, she was the only daughter of banker Stuart Grant Sim and Ida Isabel Carter and was raised at the family home “Carnlea” overlooking Calderstones Park before moving to Surrey during her youth. Privately educated, she pursued professional training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, which laid the foundation for a series of notable screen roles beginning in 1944. Sim’s breakthrough came with Powell and Pressburger’s A Canterbury Tale (1944), after which she appeared alongside her future husband in the Boulting brothers’ The Guinea Pig (1948) and starred opposite Anthony Steel in West of Zanzibar (1954). In the theatrical realm she shared the stage with Richard Attenborough in the original London production of Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap (1952), portraying the iconic character Mollie Ralston. Beyond performance, she devoted more than six decades to the Actors’ Charitable Trust, championing the redevelopment of Denville Hall and serving as a trustee and vice‑president, thereby ensuring care for retired actors. Her philanthropic spirit extended to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where she was a generous benefactor and supported her husband’s tenure as president. Married to Sir Richard Attenborough from 1945 until his death in 2014, the couple raised three children—Michael, Jane and Charlotte—who each pursued artistic careers. In her later years Sheila entered Denville Hall, where she faced senile dementia before passing away in January 2016; her ashes rest alongside those of her husband and beloved daughter at St Mary Magdalene, Richmond. Her legacy endures through her film work, charitable contributions, and the continued prominence of the Attenborough family in the arts.
