Serge Marquand

Serge Marquand was a prolific French actor whose career spanned over four decades, beginning in the late 1950s and concluding in the early 2000s. Born Serge Paul Gabriel Marquand on 12 March 1930 in Marseille, he grew up in a family deeply rooted in the cinematic world; his brother Christian Marquand became a noted actor and his sister Nadine Trintignant a celebrated filmmaker. From his first uncredited appearance as a skier in Roger Vadim’s 'Les Liaisons dangereuses' (1959), Serge quickly demonstrated a versatile screen presence that allowed him to transition between supporting roles and memorable character parts. Throughout the 1960s he worked repeatedly with Vadim, appearing in films such as 'Et mourir de plaisir' (1960) and 'Barbarella' (1968), where he portrayed the enigmatic Captain Sun. His collaborations extended to directors like Costa‑Gavras, Robert Hossein, and Jean Rollin, contributing to genre‑spanning works from westerns like 'Massacre at Marble City' (1964) to horror‑cult classics such as 'Les Raisins de la Mort' (1978). In addition to his film work, Marquand appeared on stage, notably in the 1963 production Six Hommes en question directed by Robert Hossein. Over the course of his career he accumulated more than one hundred film credits, embodying a wide array of personalities—from a ruthless sheriff in 'Cemetery Without Crosses' (1969) to a weary night‑club owner in James Ivory’s 'Quartet' (1981). His dedication to the craft earned him a reputation as a reliable and understated performer, often enhancing the narratives with subtle intensity. Serge Marquand’s life was cut short by acute leukemia, and he passed away on 4 September 2004 in Paris, leaving behind a legacy that continues to be celebrated by aficionados of French cinema.
