Scott MacArthur was born on August 6, 1979 in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up surrounded by a family that valued entertainment and creativity. His brother Hayes MacArthur also pursued a career in acting, while his step‑father William F. Farley provided a supportive environment that encouraged artistic exploration. After completing his formal education, Scott immersed himself in the vibrant Chicago improv scene, honing his comedic timing and improvisational skills in venues that have launched numerous television talents. Originally hired solely for the writing staff, he was later offered the role of Jimmy Shepherd after the original pilot actor Nat Faxon became unavailable, prompting Fox to reshoot the pilot and embed Scott into the core ensemble.
