Ryszard Dembiński

Ryszard Dembiński was born on 24 February 1924 in Poznań, the son of a Polish artillery officer, at a time when the newly reborn Polish state was still consolidating after more than a century of partition. The outbreak of World War II dramatically altered his childhood; after the German invasion in September 1939 he, his mother and his grandmother were deported to the harsh steppes of Kazakhstan, an experience that forged his resilience and deepened his patriotism. At the age of seventeen he escaped the Soviet exile and joined the Polish forces being assembled under General Władysław Anders, which eventually made its way to Iran and formed the core of the legendary Polish 2nd Corps that fought bravely in the Italian campaign of 1944‑45. In 1944 he was transferred to the Scottish‑based Polish 1st Armoured Division commanded by General Stanisław Maczek, and he landed on the Normandy beaches in early August as part of the Canadian 1st Army. He distinguished himself during the ferocious battle to close the Falaise Gap on 21 August 1944, and remained in combat through the advance into Germany, taking part in the capture of the naval base at Wilhelmshaven in May 1945 before the war ended. After demobilisation he kept his military rank of rotmistrz and briefly served as a military journalist from 1956 to 2000, documenting the experiences of his fellow veterans. In civilian life, Dembiński devoted himself to preserving Polish wartime heritage; from 1979 to 2004 he chaired the Polish Institute and Sikorski Museum in London, securing funding, safeguarding regimental colours, and fostering a vibrant community of former soldiers and their families. He played a ceremonial role in June 1990 when he accompanied President‑in‑exile Ryszard Kaczorowski in handing over the presidential insignia to Lech Wałęsa, and later welcomed both Wałęsa and his successor Aleksander Kwasniewski during their state visits to the United Kingdom. Dembiński married Wanda Dembińska, the eldest daughter of Count Edward Raczyński, but the couple remained childless. He passed away on 29 June 2008 in London, leaving behind a legacy of courageous service, diligent historical stewardship, and unwavering dedication to the Polish diaspora.
