Roy Atwell

Roy Atwell (born John Leroy Atwell on May 2, 1878 in Syracuse, New York) was an American actor and comedian whose career spanned both the silent film era and the golden age of animation. He began his professional training at the Sargent School of Acting and entered the Broadway scene in the early 1910s, initially pursuing serious dramatic roles. A memorable mishap onstage—where he garbled a line about spring and birds—elicited an uproarious audience reaction and redirected his path toward comedy, a shift that defined his public persona. Over the next three decades Atwell appeared in thirty‑four films between 1914 and 1947, ranging from modest shorts such as The Little Broadcast to supporting parts in major studio productions like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, where he provided the iconic voice of the bumbling Doc, albeit uncredited. His Broadway résumé also includes titles such as The Little Missus, The Mimic World, The Firefly, and How’s Your Health?, showcasing his versatility as a stage performer and member of Fortune Gallo’s San Carlo Opera Company. In addition to acting, Atwell contributed to the musical world, joining ASCAP in 1957 and penning the novelty song 'Some Little Bug Is Going to Find You' along with the whimsical lyric 'When a Piece of Toast Climbs Your Bedpost with a Cigar.' Personal life saw three marriages—to Blanche Wear, Dorothy Young, and Ethel Smith—and the birth of a single child, John Leroy Atwell Jr. He remained active in entertainment until his final screen appearance in Where There’s Life (1947) and lived out his later years in New York City, passing away on February 6, 1962. His legacy endures through the classic Disney character he helped bring to life and the comedic timing that continues to influence performers today.
