Roger Duchesne, born on 27 July 1906 in Luxeuil‑les‑Bains, Haute‑Saône, emerged as a notable figure in French cinema during the tumultuous years between the wars. He began his screen career in 1934, quickly appearing in a series of genre pictures such as Vers l'abîme (1934) and Le Golem (1936), displaying a charismatic presence that suited both adventure and drama. Over the next two decades he amassed a filmography of roughly thirty titles, working alongside prominent directors and sharing the screen with celebrated actors of the era. His most enduring role came in 1956 when Jean‑Pierre Melville cast him as the eponymous anti‑hero in Bob le flambeur, a film now regarded as a precursor to the French New Wave. Despite a relatively modest output, Duchesne’s performances were characterized by a blend of world‑weary bravado and a subtle vulnerability that resonated with post‑war audiences. He was also known for his brief marriage to actress Yvette Lebon, a union that placed him within the inner circles of Parisian film society.

The shadow of World II heavily tarnished Duchesne’s legacy. Historical accounts accuse him of collaborating with the German occupiers, even suggesting involvement with the Gestapo and participation in the torture of a Resistance member. These allegations led to severe professional sanctions during the post‑war épuration, leaving him unable to secure acting work for years. During this period he turned to writing cheap adventure novels and later, crime fiction, while eking out a living selling scrap metal in Saint‑Ouen. Melville’s decision to cast him in Bob le flambeur was therefore both ironic and redemptive, offering Duchesne a final cinematic appearance before his retirement after the 1957 film Marchands de filles. He died on 25 December 1996 in Les Mureaux, Yvelines, leaving behind a controversial but unforgettable imprint on French film history.
