Roberto Medina

Roberto Gerardo Medina Arellano ( born 18 April 1968 in Mexico City ) is a Mexican former professional football midfielder and renowned football manager who has left a lasting imprint on both the men’s and women’s games in Mexico. His playing career began in 1988 with UNAM Pumas, where he quickly became a regular and contributed to the club’s 1989 CONCACAF Champions’ Cup triumph and the 1990‑91 Mexican Primera División title, showcasing a blend of tactical intelligence and gritty determination. In 1992 he transferred to CF Pachuca, enjoying his most prolific scoring season with seven goals, including a memorable brace against Deportivo Toluca on 18 October 1992 and a goal in a 5‑0 demolition of arch‑rivals Club América three weeks later. The following year he signed for UAG Tecos, playing a pivotal role in the historic 1993‑94 league‑winning campaign, the only championship in the club’s history. A move to CF Monterrey in 1994 saw Medina amass a club‑record 103 top‑division appearances, cementing his reputation as a reliable midfield engine before subsequent spells at León, Puebla, Atlante, Irapuato, Veracruz and finally Zacatepec, where he hung up his boots in 2003. Internationally, Medina earned seven caps for the senior Mexico national team between 1993 and 1998, debuting in a friendly victory over Cameroon and culminating his international tenure with a decisive 1‑0 win over the United States in the 1998 CONCACAF Gold Cup final. After retiring as a player, he swiftly transitioned to coaching, taking charge of the Mexico U‑20 women’s side and guiding them to the quarter‑finals of the 2010 and 2012 FIFA U‑20 Women’s World Cups. His success at youth level earned him the head‑coach position of the senior Mexico women’s national team, a role he held intermittently from 2016 to 2022, during which he emphasized professionalization and tactical sophistication. In 2019 he accepted the managerial reins of Tigres UANL Femenil, leading the club to back‑to‑back Liga MX Femenil championships, before moving to Atlas Femenil in 2023.
