Robert McNamara

What's After the Movie

Robert McNamara

Robert McNamara was an American businessman and government official whose career spanned the second half of the twentieth century, reshaping both corporate management and national security policy. He rose to prominence at the Ford Motor Company after World War II, where he led the famed “Whiz Kids” in applying statistical control and computer‑driven planning to streamline production and cut costs, eventually becoming the first non‑family president of the firm in 1960. In 1961 President John F. Kennedy appointed him Secretary of Defense, a post he held through the administrations of Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson until 1968, making him the longest‑serving holder of that office and a central figure during the Cuban Missile Crisis, the construction of the nuclear triad, and the early escalation of the Vietnam War. McNamara introduced systems analysis and the Planning, Programming and Budgeting System to the Pentagon, insisting that every major decision be reduced to data, charts, and cost‑benefit calculations, a method that both increased efficiency and generated controversy among uniformed leaders. Although he initially championed massive troop deployments in Southeast Asia, by the late 1960s he grew skeptical of the war’s prospects and publicly expressed regret for many of his decisions in later memoirs. After resigning as defense secretary he became President of the World Bank (1968‑1981), where he shifted the institution’s focus from large‑scale industrial projects to poverty‑reduction programs and environmental concerns. In retirement he served on the boards of the California Institute of Technology, the Brookings Institution, and numerous charitable foundations, continuing to influence public‑policy debates until his death in 2009. His legacy is marked by groundbreaking managerial reforms, controversial wartime judgments, and a lifelong commitment to applying analytical rigor to complex societal challenges.
