What's After the Movie
Sir Robert Helpmann was a multifaceted Australian artist whose career spanned almost six decades, encompassing ballet, theatre, film and opera. Born on 9 April 1909 in Mount Gambier, South Australia, he grew up as the eldest of three children of James Murray Helpman and Mary Gardiner, who cultivated his early love of the stage. After a brief apprenticeship with Anna Pavlova’s company in 1926, Helpmann joined J C Williamson’s productions as a principal dancer, quickly gaining a reputation for virtuoso technique and sparkling comic timing. In 1932 he moved to Britain at the urging of actress Margaret Rawlings and was accepted by Ninette de Valois into the Vic‑Wells Ballet, where he became a leading male dancer, partnering legends such as Alicia Markova and Margot Fonteyn. During World War II he assumed the company’s choreographic duties while still performing principal roles, creating works like Comus and Miracle in the Gorbals.
Beyond ballet, Helpmann cultivated a distinguished acting career on the Old Vic, the West End and Broadway, tackling Shakespearean heroes, Shaw’s witty protagonists and modern existential figures. His filmography includes memorable parts in The Red Shoes, The Tales of Hoffmann and the iconic Child‑Catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. He later co‑directed the Australian Ballet (1965‑1976), choreographed several Australian ballets such as The Display and Yugen, and directed opera productions for Covent Garden and the Sydney Opera House. Knighted in 1968 and honoured with a state funeral, his legacy endures through the Helpmann Awards and the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre in his hometown.
